Skull and Bones: impenetrable secret society

Skull and Bones Society

Skull and Bones members are elected from the leading elite

With strong members and mysterious rituals, Skull and Bones secret society is always associated with well-kept secrets and conspiracy theory.

In 1918, at the shelter of darkness, Prescott Bush, a student at Yale University, profaned the tomb of American leader Geronimo. Helped by several conspirators, Prescott Bush took the skull and two bones from the skeleton of the famous leader of the Apache Indians and took them to Yale University headquarters.

Here, the skull bones became the emblem of the most mysterious secret society in America’s history. Prescott Bush, the father of President George W. Bush and George W.’s grandfather, was a member of this organization.

Skull and Bones Emblem

Along with several colleagues, he was a member of an elite club at Yale University, known as the Skull and Bones Society. Throughout history, some of the most prominent American personalities have been Bonesmen (“people of the bones“), in free translation, meaning members of the secret society.

Members of the organization were chosen from among the best students at Yale. In addition to the men in the Bush family – both former presidents have trampled on Prescott’s footsteps during his time at the university – hundreds of government officials were found among the members of the society.

Among them, Secretary of State John Kerry and people in the entertainment industry, such as actor Paul Giamatti (Yale graduate, denied he was part of society). However, apart from notable graduates and a few rumors and legends, there is little known about this shadowy organization.

Founded in 1832, 131 years after the founding of Yale University, Skull and Bones was founded after some secret societies of the day broke into a prize ceremony. In order to overcome the conflict, several members of Linonia, Brothers to Unity and Calliopeea have unleashed and formed Skull and Bones.

William Huntington-Russel and Alphonso Taft took over the task of organizing the society and, together with 12 other members, set up a so-called inaugural group. Since 1832, every spring, society has elected 15 new members.

Since the early 1990s, women are also accepted. Candidates include campus student leaders and important names (children of personalities) from whom society believes it could benefit in the future.

Initiation ritual – an enigma

skull and bones headquarters
Named the Grave, the HQ is as mysterious as the organization: a bleak building without windows

The process of initiation in the secret society is surrounded by mystery. According to some speculation, it involves occult practices, black magic and even animal sacrifices.

Like all university companies (Yale has seven such organizations), Skull and Bones also has a headquarters. Known as the Grave, the Skull and Bones building is a Gothic edifice without windows located just outside the campus, where members gather for meetings and events.

The grave would also be the resting place of Geronimo’s bones (after being stolen by Prescott Bush), the skull of former President Martin Van Buren, and the Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa.

The secret society Skull and Bones also owns Caprica Island, a patch of earth used as a refuge, a place where members can go on a weekend to “revive old friendships.” Against the backdrop of secrecy and elitism promoted by society, Skull and Bones and its members have long been the subject of conspiracy theories.

Skull and Bones is at the center of power

skull and bones members
Among the most influential members of Skull and Bones, three presidents: William Howard Taft, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush

Some argue that the organization was behind Kennedy’s assassination, that it was responsible for creating the nuclear bomb, that it was sponsored and influenced by Illuminati, or even exercised absolute control over the American espionage agency, the CIA.

However, no matter how bizarre these theories call, they are not far from the truth when it comes to members of the organization. Let’s look at the facts.

At various times throughout history, members of Skull and Bones controlled the largest fortunes in the US: the Rockefeller, Carnegie and Ford families. Also, some members have stepped up their career and occupied high positions in the Council for Foreign Relations and in massive corporations.

And, of course, the most important thing: the organization “gave” three US presidents (William Howard Taft, alongside the two Bush, George W. and his father). In fact, both candidates for the presidential election in 2004, Republican George W. Bush and Democrat John Kerry, were at that time members of the secret society Skull and Bones

In the video, both contestants are asked about their membership in Skull and Bones. None answer.

Nobody – never – does not talk about Skull and Bones

Despite the theories of the conspiracy and the accusations brought to them, the “people of the bones” have kept a silent …  Grave about what is happening in their sanctuary. Both Kerry and Bush were asked about their work in this society during the 2004 elections, but none revealed anything.

“It’s a secret,” Kerry said, without developing the subject. In turn, Bush said that “it’s so secret that I can not say anything about it.”

The reason for this behavior might be that the members of society actually compel to control world politics, or that nothing really worth mentioning in the tomb. Why this attitude? Do members simply enjoy being at the center of some insane theories?

Hundreds of books, documentaries and television shows have tried to find out more about how Skull and Bones work. But the secrecy of the members of this secret organization has defeated every time.

Perhaps the only way to find out about Skull and Bones is to join Yale University and try to become a member of this society …

I remember watching a movie with a secret society and thinking this is so far fetched. However later on realising that it is not as crazy as it seems.

Such an interesting read. In my country (Hungary) we don’t have this kind of University life, and traditions , neither these huge names like Yale, so it’s great to learn about this. As the previous commenter, I also remember seeing a movie that was touching a similar topic (maybe not skull & bones, but definitely some serious secret society at a grand Uni).

I’ve not heard of this group before. Do you think its an exclusively American thing, or do you think there is a wider international network?

This was such a fascinating read! I really haven’t heard nearly as much about the Skull and Bones as I have about the better-known but still private organizations like the Freemasons. Thanks for the education!

I have heard the skull and bones mysteries. But i don’t know what I think about it all. They could be real. Or they could be people putting people on because they can and because they don’t take questions seriously. Who knows?
